Reading the labelHow to judge a seller's trained protection dog claims
Anyone can write the word trained. Evidence is harder to fake.

01Ask for evidence
- A live or in-person demonstration of obedience around distractions.
- A written account of what the dog has been taught and by whom.
- Health records and who performed any testing.
- A reference you can call.
- A contract that explains returns.
02The control test
Ask the handler to call the dog off something interesting. A dog that releases and returns is more useful than one that only performs on cue in a quiet field.
03Red flags
Pressure to wire money, no chance to meet the dog and guarantees that it will never bite are reasons to stop. State law places responsibility on the owner no matter what the seller said.
