Walking a strong dog in North Carolina State Parks

Pets are welcome in all state parks, with conditions. Here are the ones that trip people up.

01Allowed with conditions

According to North Carolina State Parks rules, pets are permitted in all state parks when on an attended leash or other restraint no longer than 6 feet and under the owner's constant control. Owners who do not leash may be fined. Waste goes into trash bins, not the woods, and dogs should stay on the trail and yield to cyclists and riders.

02Off limits

PlaceDog rule
BuildingsStrictly prohibited
CabinsNot permitted
Bathhouses and swimming areasNot allowed
Most campgroundsAllowed; at night, dog stays in your tent or vehicle during quiet hours

Campground quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and the park rules guidelines add that staff may ask owners to remove dangerous or noisy pets.

03A specific example

At Hammocks Beach State Park, visitors with pets bound for Bear Island must arrange their own transport for the animal. Check each park's page for details before you set out.

04A test for any dog you consider

Walk it on a 6-foot leash through a place with people, bikes and other dogs. If you cannot do that calmly, a state park will not be relaxing.
